Tesla Charging At Home With Octopus Energy
Since switching to an electric vehicle, I've been tracking the real cost of Tesla charging at home with Octopus Energy. By combining home charging with a smart tariff, I've been able to keep running costs significantly lower than petrol or diesel alternatives.
Most of my charging takes place overnight when electricity rates are typically lower. Using the Octopus app, I can monitor charging sessions, electricity usage and overall costs, helping me understand exactly how much it costs to run my Tesla day to day.
The actual cost depends on factors such as your tariff, battery size, annual mileage and charging habits. However, for many EV owners, Tesla charging at home with Octopus Energy can be one of the most cost effective ways to power a vehicle.

In this article, I’ll show the actual charging cost, electricity usage, charging time and my honest thoughts on whether home charging with Octopus Energy still offers good value in 2026.
My Tesla Charging Session
For this charging session, I charged my Tesla at home overnight using my PodPoint charger while supplied by Octopus Energy.
The session used:
60.8 kWh of electricity
8 hours and 57 minutes charging time
Total charging cost: £14.71
The charge took the battery from a lower state of charge up to 100%.
Based on the amount of electricity added, home charging still works out significantly cheaper than most public rapid chargers, especially when charging overnight on lower cost tariffs.

My Octopus Energy Usage
I also checked my electricity usage directly through the Octopus Energy app during the charging period.
The app provides daily, weekly and monthly electricity tracking, which makes it much easier to see how EV charging affects overall household energy usage.
On heavier charging days, you can clearly see the increase in electricity demand compared to normal household usage. Despite this, charging at home overnight is still far cheaper than relying entirely on public charging networks in most cases.
The Octopus Energy app has been useful for tracking:

estimated electricity costs
overall household consumption trends

My yearly electricity usage history through the Octopus Energy app gives a good overall picture of seasonal energy usage and household consumption trends.

Monthly tracking makes it easier to spot higher usage periods and monitor how EV charging affects overall household electricity costs.

On 25 May 2026, my electricity usage increased significantly while charging my Tesla at home overnight. The Octopus Energy app clearly showed the jump in usage compared to a normal day, which made it easy to track the charging cost directly.
What I Learned From Tracking My EV Charging With Octopus Energy
After charging my Tesla from low battery to 100% overnight, the Octopus Energy app clearly showed the increase in electricity usage and estimated charging cost. The app makes it easy to compare daily, monthly, and yearly usage, which helps monitor EV charging costs and general household electricity consumption in one place. Based on my Pod Point charging data, the overnight Tesla charge added around 61kWh to my home electricity usage.
Tesla Supercharger Vs Charging At Home With Octopus Energy
I recently compared Tesla Supercharger costs against charging my Tesla at home using Octopus Energy. During one Tesla Supercharger session at Rugby J1, the car used 54.7kWh and cost £24.08 at £0.44 per kWh. By comparison, charging my Tesla at home overnight through Octopus Energy added around 61kWh and cost approximately £14.71. The difference in charging cost is one of the main reasons I prefer charging at home where possible. The Octopus Energy app also makes it much easier to track electricity usage and monitor EV charging costs over time.

In my case, charging at home through Octopus Energy worked out at roughly 24p per kWh compared to 44p per kWh using a Tesla Supercharger.
That made home charging around 45% cheaper than rapid public charging for a similar amount of electricity added to the car.
I personally use Octopus Energy myself for my home electricity and Tesla charging, so the screenshots and charging comparisons in this article are based on my real usage and actual costs.
Is Charging A Tesla At Home Cheaper Than Public Charging?
In my experience, charging a Tesla at home using an Octopus smart tariff is significantly cheaper than relying on public rapid chargers. Home charging allows me to take advantage of lower overnight electricity rates, helping to reduce the overall cost of running the car.
While public chargers are useful when travelling, most day to day charging is far more economical when done at home. The exact savings depend on your tariff, charging habits and annual mileage, but for regular Tesla owners, home charging is usually the most cost effective option.
