I currently use Octopus Energy to charge my Tesla at home and recently compared my real home charging costs against Tesla Supercharger pricing.
Using the Octopus Energy app, I can track my electricity usage by day, week, month, and year, which makes it much easier to monitor EV charging costs and overall household electricity usage.

My Real Tesla Charging Costs Using Octopus Energy
After charging my Tesla overnight at home, the Octopus Energy app showed a noticeable increase in electricity usage compared to a normal day.
During one recent charging session:
Charging Method | Electricity Added | Total Cost | Cost Per kWh |
Home charging with Octopus Energy | 60.8kWh | £14.71 | 24.2p per kWh |
Tesla Supercharger | 54.7kWh | £24.08 | 44p per kWh |
In my case, charging at home through Octopus Energy worked out significantly cheaper than using a Tesla Supercharger.
The Octopus Energy app also makes it easy to compare usage across daily, monthly, and yearly views, which helps track how EV charging affects overall electricity costs.
Which Octopus Energy Tariff Is Best For EV Charging?
Octopus Energy offers several tariffs suitable for electric vehicle charging depending on your charging habits and whether you can charge overnight.
Common EV tariffs include:
Octopus Go
Intelligent Octopus Go
Agile Octopus
Tracker tariffs
For most EV owners, overnight charging is usually the cheapest option because electricity rates are often lower outside peak hours.
Using Smart Charging With Octopus Energy
I currently use a Pod Point home charger alongside Octopus Energy.
Smart chargers allow you to:
schedule overnight charging
take advantage of cheaper electricity periods
monitor electricity usage
track charging costs more accurately
This can make a noticeable difference over a full year of EV ownership.
Tracking EV Charging Costs Through The Octopus Energy App
One thing I genuinely like about Octopus Energy is how easy the app makes it to track electricity usage.
The app provides:
daily electricity usage
weekly comparisons
monthly cost breakdowns
yearly electricity trends
This makes it much easier to understand how much your Tesla or EV is actually costing to charge at home.
Is Charging A Tesla At Home Cheaper Than Supercharging?
Based on my own charging data, home charging through Octopus Energy was substantially cheaper than rapid charging through the Tesla Supercharger network.
Superchargers are obviously useful for long journeys and travelling, but for day-to-day charging, home charging is usually much more cost effective.
